Porsche 993 C4 Cab

November 14, 2024

Border Reivers are delighted to offer this very special Porsche to the market. Its a car we know very well as it belonged to my friends wife (Susan) who purchased it in 2002 when it was the less than 5 year old. Never in the time I have spent at the factory or thereafter have I seen a Porsche 911-993 with so many factory options. It makes me think it was a press or show car.

The 09991 code means the car has an option from the Souderwunsch Program which is now know as the ‘Exclusive’ designation which can account for many of the fitted factory options, cars stayed on the standard production line however when it shows the 09981 code as this car does it is very likely the car left the main production line & was moved to the Werk 1 building for the additional one off items some of which I have never seen before, like fitted arm rests.

Not all of the factory option are listed on the under bonnet/service book labels however I’m sure the 09981 option covers the unlisted items.

Some of the option codes that are visible

X17 Light Rootwood dashboard trim

X28 Light Rootwood steering wheel with airbag in leather

This is a stunning looking car in the unusual shade of Glacier white complemented by the blue hood, as previously mentioned almost every option available has been fitted. The car is extremely tight & unbelievably still has a new feel to it which is a credit to its 3 previous owner, looking after it correctly with regular servicing. Showing all its original factory paper stickers which are located under the bonnet, in the service book & the bar code on the N/S B’post, with the hard plastic vin plate on the O/S  B’post just displays the originality of the car. The car comes with a comprehensive paperwork file in a large A4 folder, the original document folder with all its original paper work & books (hand book, Service book, assistance book, Exclusive book, the 911 idea) 2 sets of keys, tool roll etc.

PORSCHE 993 C4S

November 8, 2024

Perhaps the closest you’ll ever get to owning a new 993 C4S totally immaculate in every respect with full detailed service history & only 19k miles. These wide-bodied cars are the pinnacle of the 993’s & is the most collectible model of the 993 range (out with the limited production cars like the GT/RS models), cleaner lines than the Turbo but with the same wide body in fact it is essentially the Turbo without the engine & spoiler. Not only is this the perfect car its also the perfect colour combo, what’s not to Love? This Porsche is investment quality. You may have an impossible wait for another like this.

This car has everything you would expect all the original documents in the original wallet. original stamped service book, sale book etc. 2 sets of keys, large history with the original invoices & mots. This is the Best.

Doing a quick search there is one local with 4 times the mileage which has been repainted & needs a full re-trim (£110k) & another reduced from £120k to £110k stating a full service history however on close scrutiny its doesn’t have a service history its a 1998 car with no original service book or history. The invoices start at 2002 !!!!

Delighted to be offering this simply stunning 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster

Shut Restorations of Seattle did an exquisite restoration on this 1957 Speedster. During the restoration, this 356 was completely disassembled and stripped down to the bare shell so that every aspect could be properly addressed. The body and panels are original and still retain their correct stampings/numbers. All panels were pre-fit with bumpers, windshield frame, and soft top to ensure the absolute best result. All the chrome was triple-plated, and all of the components were restored or replaced.

Mechanically, it is in excellent condition! The complete driveline was rebuilt including the engine, transmission, suspension, braking system, fuel system, and a new wire harness. The correct 1600cc engine performs flawlessly with plenty of power, and the manual 4-speed 644 transmission shifts through all the gears with ease. The four-wheel drum brakes have been rebuilt, including the wheel cylinders, brake lines, and master cylinder. The undercarriage is fully detailed, including the suspension, engine, and transmission.

Specification
• 60 horsepower
• 1,582cc OHV air-cooled horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine
• Four-speed manual 644 transmission
• Independent front suspension with laminated torsion bars
• Parallel trailing arms
• Tubular shock absorbers
• Independent rear swing axles with torsion bars and tubular shock absorbers
• Four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes
• Wheelbase: 82.7 in

Finished in a period-correct exterior colour Signal red, the condition and the colour combination is simply stunning! The interior is upholstered in Black with red piping, German Oatmeal square weave carpets, black German canvas high bow soft-top, black German canvas tonneau cover and side curtains. Matching body panels, hood, doors & engine lid, date stamped wheels. Options include, a deluxe horn ring, sealed beam headlights with cheese grater headlamp guards, speedometer in mile per hour. Perfectly straight body with excellent gaps & panel fit. Complete with Jack/tools, side curtains bag, Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche USA, Large history file documenting the restoration. The best Speedster you’ll find with no issues. Absolutely superb in every way. This beautiful Porsche 356A Speedster is turn key & ready for immediate Concours, rally events, or drive and enjoy you won’t be disappointed with this purchase however you choose to enjoy it.

History

An American idea in the 1950’s was building a car to counter the British competition. For sporty use on the racetrack, as well as in everyday life. Light and nimble, but also minimalist and affordable. The Porsche Speedster quickly became an icon. No wonder the original Porsche 356 Speedster now has five descendants.

The Porsche Speedster made automotive sacrifices socially acceptable

In the middle of the last century, Porsche made conscious automotive luxury sacrifices acceptable with the first Speedster. Its recipe was simplicity in action. A low, curved windshield – which could easily be removed for weekend races – plus a folding emergency soft top and. For an additional charge, plug-in windows for the doors were available. These were the ingredients for the Porsche 356 Speedster in 1954.

The spartan cockpit had lightweight bucket seats with rigid backrests. Instrumentation was limited to a speedometer and temperature gauge. Heating and tachometer remained optional extras to keep the base price below the magic $3,000 mark. The efforts paid off. With up to 1,171 units sold in its strongest year, the Porsche 356 Speedster became an instant commercial success.

This car was delivered new in Germany although it was a C16 UK spec car. The current owner believes it to have been the right hand drive press/test car before being imported to the UK in 2006. There can be no doubt this is the pre-production Anniversary Boxster S Spyder which makes this a unique Porsche.

Offered in lovely all round condition with a few minor stone chips on the bonnet but nothing that warrants paint correction.

Porsche 968CS (Club Sport)

October 29, 2024

We really do love finding great cars and this beautiful 968 Club Sport is a real prize. Owned by a friend & Porsche club member since the car was just over 3 year old & pampered since.

The car was pre registered by the suppling dealer Lancaster Porsche (30-09-1994) & sold to its 1st owner Ms Nichole (22-10-1994)  She sold the car within 6 months to its 2nd owner Mr Smith (05-04-1995) and our client Purchased the car from GlenVarigill Porsche (02-04-1998)

This Club Sport is in outstanding condition and we had nothing to do, regarding preparation. Look at the images of the engine bay & spare wheel area, they look almost new with all the original labels in place. The spare wheel is unused. The car comes with its original tool kit, jack, sunroof bag, luggage net, original documents wallet, all the original hand/service books. 15 old mots going back to the first 18-11-1997, 2 sets of keys, a large A4 folder of old invoices & the all important 968CS supplement to the drivers Manual.

With a current mileage of 102k that’s under 4k miles per year. This car is totally as it left the factory, no racing upgrades or none standard dodgy parts, totally standard (hard to find )

Full Main Dealer service history with the exception of 2 when they was carried out by David Philips Edinburgh’s independent Porsche specialist.

All belts done & serviced inc new battery, water pump, new clutch cylinder  & fluid change 20 miles ago

Whats not to like & priced well for an exceptional car.

Model history

From 1993 through 1995, Porsche offered a lighter-weight “Club Sport” version of the 968 designed for enthusiasts seeking increased track performance. Much of the 968’s luxury-oriented equipment was removed or taken off the options list; less sound deadening material was used, electrical windows were replaced with crank-driven units, upgraded stereo systems, A/C and sunroof were still optional as on the standard Coupe and Convertible models. In addition, Porsche installed manually adjustable lightweight Recaro racing seats rather than the standard power-operated leather buckets (also manufactured by Recaro), a revised suspension system optimised and lowered by 20 mm for possible track use, 17-inch wheels (also slightly wider to accommodate wider tyres) rather than the 16-inch as found on the Coupe and wider tyres, 225 front and 255 rear rather than 205 and 225 respectively. The four-spoke airbag steering wheel was replaced with a thicker-rimmed three-spoke sports steering wheel with no airbag, heated washer jets were replaced with non heated, vanity covers in the engine bay were deleted, as was the rear wiper. The Club Sport has no rear seats.

Club Sport models were only available in Grand Prix White, black, Speed yellow, Guards red, Riviera blue or Maritime blue exterior colours. Seat backs were colour-coded to the body. Club Sport decals were standard but there was a ‘delete’ option. All Club Sports had black interiors with the 944 S2 door cards. Due to the reduction in the number of electrical items the wiring loom was reduced in complexity which saved weight and also the battery was replaced with a smaller one, again reducing weight. With the no frills approach meaning less weight, as well as the optimising of the suspension, Porsche could focus media attention on the Club Sport variants fast road and track abilities. This helped to slightly bolster the flagging sales figures in the mid-1990s. The Club Sport variant achieved a ‘Performance Car Of The Year’ award in 1993 from Performance Car magazine in the UK. Club Sport models were only officially available in the UK, Europe, Japan & Australia, although “grey market” cars found their way elsewhere. The declared weight of the 968 CS is 1,320 kg (2,910 lb), ~100 kg (220 lb) lighter than the regular 968. Acceleration from a standstill to 97 km/h (60 mph) takes 5.6 seconds and top speed is 260 km/h (162 mph).

A UK-only version called “968 Sport”, was offered in 1994 and 1995, and was essentially a Club Sport model (and was produced on the same production line with similar chassis numbers) with electric windows, electric release boot, central locking, cloth comfort seats (different from both the standard and the Club Sport). With the added electrics the larger wiring loom was used. The Sport Variant also got back the two rear seats, again in the cloth material specific to the Sport. At £29,975, the 968 Sport was priced £5,500 lower than the standard 968, but had most of the latter’s desirable “luxuries” and consequently outsold it by a large margin (306 of the 968 Sport models compared to 40 standard 968 coupés).

Porsche 356A RHD

October 26, 2024

Border Reivers are delighted to offer this amazingly prepared right hand drive Porsche 356A from 1956.

People usually say (tongue in cheek) it was a no expense restoration, well this was & we have the paperwork to back it up. Restored by Porsche specialist Gant speed, we have a letter in the file from Gant Speed saying the cost of the restoration was in excess of £100k (more like £150k) and they, have done an insurance valuation for circa £42,500.00.

Money continued to be poured into this car as it was prepared for the Liege-Rome-Leige (twice), Monte Carlo (three times), The Italian Job, London – Lisboa, 356 meeting in Holland 2001, Rallye des Alpes, Marathon Rally, The winter Rally, etc.

2012 Maxted -Page & Prill issued a £7231.22 invoice

2013 Maxted-Page & Prill £2530.00

06-10-2013  The car changes hands to the current owner and the expense continues as he basically rebuilds the car at a cost of £45k

2020 Border Reivers sell the car to a very good client & are asked to prepare it for the Monte Carlo Rally 2021 however it was cancelled due to Covid however during the down time we rebuilt the engine (128 BHP) & did some modifications to the car like the fuel filter through the bonnet, fitted safer & more comfortable seats, re-did a lot of the wiring & a host of other jobs to make it safer & reliable including the fitting of front & rear bumpers.

2022 Border Reivers are asked to drive the car on the Monte Carlo Rally.

Now turn key, this little Porsche is ready to take on the rally world once more. Offered in its original colour of Aquamarine, the car comes with its original buff & green, old style log books & FIA rally papers. The car still has its original registration number VKA 527.

Porsche 928S4

October 20, 2024

Vehicle Story

The Porsche 928 burst on to the motoring scene back in 1978 and was quite a shock for the marque’s enthusiasts, looking like nothing else you could buy. It was of course intended to replace the 911.

A veritable technical tour de force, it so impressed the motoring journalists of the day that it was voted European Car of the Year 1978. Quite an accolade for a non-mainstream car.

Under the bonnet sat an all-alloy liner-less V8 which was attached to a rear-mounted gearbox. The galvanised and highly aerodynamic body had aluminium doors and bonnet plus body-coloured wraparound bumpers – all a bit radical.

It was said that Porsche referred to the 928 as an ethical sports car if that’s not a contradiction in terms. By that they meant it had four seats, modest emissions from the low-stressed engine and performance which was brisk, rather than startling.

In effect they had created a rather cramped GT car and let’s rejoice that they did, as it gave the 911 a reprieve.

However, the original 240bhp 4.5-litre engine was soon increased to 4.7 for the ‘S’ model which appeared in 1980, the extra 55bhp giving the 928 the power it needed to match its dramatic looks.

In 1986 the S4 variant debuted, and this was powered by a 316hp 5.0-litre V8. Styling updates gave the car a much cleaner, sleeker look and undoubtedly the S4 models are the most sought after today.

The 928 therefore deserves our thanks and praise not only for encouraging Porsche to broaden their horizons and produce a range of front engine cars, but also for saving the 911 from extinction. It could so very easily have been dropped back then and think of all the lovely versions we would have subsequently missed out on…

Vehicle Overview

Most classic car owners take good care of their cars however this owner seems a little more fastidious than most and this is undoubtedly reflected in the car’s condition. Always garaged, regularly serviced, and taken out for a little light exercise at least every few days, the car has wanted for nothing.

The S4 has been treated to a professional bare metal respray a few years back so that the ‘Guards Red’ paintwork now positively pops.

This S4 is a proper driver’s car too, so no slushamatic gearbox. Instead, a slick manual transmission is fitted, ideal for harnessing the power of that sonorous V8.

Exterior

In 2016, independent Porsche dealers, Specialist Cars of Malton, were charged with carrying out a full bare metal respray on our 928. Looking at the vehicle that sits before us, they undoubtedly did an excellent job.

There’s no doubt that Guards Red helps to accentuate the 928’s sharp lines and looking closely you can admire the attention to detail.

The alloy wheels are free from scuffs and parking grazes, and each comes fitted with a premium Bridgestone Potenza tyre. We would have expected nothing less from our seller. Good tyres are always an excellent indication of caring classic car ownership.

You will also note the fully operational electric sunroof, ideal for those days when a little wind in the hair motoring is required.

Interior

Porsche has been making lovely interiors for many a year and the 928’s is a beauty. The electric seats up front are just as comfortable as they look, and the infinite adjustment means that finding an ideal driving position is easy.

There’s a simplicity to the controls that is now so sadly missing in modern cars. All the saliant information is displayed in clear instruments ahead of the driver, nothing superfluous.

The seats are covered in quality hides and considering they have been sat on for over 30 years, they are in remarkably good condition. There is a little gentle creasing in places, quite lovely.

Yes, there are rear seats, but they are really only suitable for children. Better to look upon them as extra luggage space.

The car comes with floor mats, with just a few marks from years of use.

The air conditioning was system was reconditioned and we can report that it is fully functional.

The car has a small crack in the dashboard and a slight bowing. The owner says this was how it was when he bought the car, and it has not changed during his ownership.

The boot area is generally neat and tide and houses a space saver spare tyre and tools. There is also a retractable cover to keep the boot contents concealed from prying eyes.

Mechanical

The stainless-steel exhaust is fairly new too.

That powerful V8 fills the engine bay and is a delight to behold. All the clear signs of careful maintenance are there, ably demonstrated by a lack of dirt and signs of new components.

History Highlights

We suggest you make a cup of tea before wading through the S4’s extensive history. It will take a while but from it you will see the attention to detail that this car has always had

The raft of paperwork includes invoices for regular servicing, most important things like cambelt changes have always been done at the right time to and that we believe was our owners philosophy. If it needed doing, get it done right away.

What We Think

This lovely 928 must surely be one of the very best in the UK right now. And it’s a later S4 model with the power to match those striking looks.

It is a car that can truly offer a sports car driving experience one minute yet can just as easily take on the role of comfortable long-distance cruiser too.

An impeccable maintenance history from a careful long-term owner should give a prospective buyer confidence in this car.

Porsche 911 3.2

October 15, 2024

Border Reivers are delighted yet again to be able to deliver the best low milage cars to the market. This 1988 Porsche 3.2 has covered only 28k miles from new with a single owner. That folks is an average of  800 miles per year (take that in for a second)

Normally we would display the history, mileage, service records etc however when the car comes from its one and only keeper we thought we would copy the letter he produced

Porsche LIB 614 (original registration)

This Porsche 911 Carrera Sport was purchased by my Father Archie Phillips, from Agnews Porsche who were based in Mallusk at the time. The cars where a gift for me & my Siblings on my Fathers 65th birthday.

She was one of three identical cars purchased at the same time, LIB 612, LIB 613 and LIB 614. My car LIB 614 was registered to Phillips (Lion motors) Ltd, my Fathers business on 01-02-1988 in Grand Prix White with Navy half leather pinstripe seats. The cars V5 was then changed into my own name (Michael Philips) however I have owned the car from new.

In February 1990 when the car had its first service with Agnews it had 6000 miles, 2nd service November 1994 with 12,700 miles. In February 1996 the car was serviced with 17,480 miles & the alarm was replaced as the original was faulty & those invoices are present. At some point in the 90’s the service book was misplaced & I cannot recall what happened to it, its possible I left it in Agnews at the time to get it stamped & didn’t get back for it. I never imagined I’d part with the car so subsequently never got a replacement book, I do however have the original handbooks & the associated invoices.

November 1996 the car was back with Agnews with a starting fault which turned to be faulty sensor (invoice supplied)

I have most of the Mots, starting in 1994 when the car was 6 years old where it had 8230 mies. Over the next few years I have the mot certificates where the car had 18750 miles by 1997. I then parked the Car in the garage in Belfast for a number of  years until I mot’d the car again in February 2000 with 21000 miles. In early 2000 the clutch had gone & Alan Roddy stripped & sent the gearbox to Agnews to get the work done & the clutch was sorted.

Coming home from my Sisters house mid summer one evening in the early 90’s I remember clipping the front wheel on a cobble & actually had to replace the wheel & tyre, when I realised the costs of parts & servicing , I only drove it on special occasions after this.

In January 2001 the milage at most was 24212 & by 2003 the car had only 26195 at its time of mot. In 2004 the miles were 26,608 & Alan Roddy carried out the removal of the oil tank & due to the car lying up, quite a substantial amount of work was carried out at this time again with a supplied invoice. It did 200 miles that year and then retested 2005 with 26876 miles. I kept the car taxed but didn’t test it and when I got around to doing it in 2008 the 911 had 26,927 miles.

The car was stored in Antrim at my Fathers, I recall starting it after a long period of idIe use & the garage filled with smoke. Not knowing this was common & could happen to old 911s. I decided to have the engine rebuilt and this was carried out in 2007. This again was carried out by Alan Roddy with supplied invoice.

In 2008 I had had enough of looking after the car in all honesty, sorned the car and she lay in my fathers garage in Antrim.

In July 2019 McMillan specialist cars pulled the 911 out of the garage in Antrim & transported it to their premised where it again sat for some time. I have expansive invoices from them. At great expense & the car was mot’d once again in 2020 with 27,010 miles. My final time of mot testing the car came in March 2022 where she had 27,672 miles. I moved house to Holywood at this stage & stored the car in my garage.

By this stage I had retired and thought I could look after her a bit more but I finally came to the decision into part with the car in August 2022 after 34 years. Although supplied with the car I had to keep my original registration as a brief memory of my time with her

signed  Michael Phillips

There you have it folks a genuine 1 owner car with low mileage with a fresh engine build for good measure.

The pictures tell the story of this wonderful car

Porsche 356A 1957

October 13, 2024

Border Reivers are delighted to be selling this matching numbers Porsche 356A from 1957. Originally delivered to North America. We believe it was imported by the Porsche Centre Perth several years ago for the owner Sir Peter Vardy as part of his personal collection. Thats the written information the new owner received on his purchase from the OPC in Perth. I personally remember seeing it sitting in their showroom. The buyer had it shipped to his home in the South of France where it was his intention to use it as a daily driver however it proved to be too impractical for his daily needs (not the running or reliability of the car) just the lack of modern creature comforts like air conditioning, safety features, general space, modern communication systems, all the gadgets we now take for granted.  The car is currently UK registered.

Being left hand drive makes it suitable for continental trip into Europe

We await delivery of the paperwork from France including its Certificate of Authenticity

The car is in a very nice condition not concours perfect just really nice with a lovely patina. I personally love the condition & would just drive it as Sir Peter & the previous owner have.

details will follow as we get them

RUF RGT (RHD)

October 9, 2024

Wow, We are delighted to be offering a right hand drive RUF at Border Reivers. This is a company Ive personally admired. I was delighted when our clients at 911 Assistant in Bangkok had been awarded the RUF franchise for Thailand.

For those unfamiliar with RUF the company/manufacture.

The history of Ruf goes back to 1939, when the founder, Alois Ruf, Sr. opened a repair garage in 1939. They didn’t really start to become synonymous with tuning Porsches until the son, Alois Ruf, Jr., took over the company in 1974. He became known for modifying stock Porsche 911 Turbos that delivered more power and performance than any stock version. In 1981, they officially became RUF Automobile Gmbh, a manufacturer of automobiles. This is crucial to their history because it’s what would differentiate them from the Tech Arts and Gemballas of the world, and later Singers, Guntherwerks,. When you bought a Ruf, you didn’t own a Porsche, you owned a Ruf. Your vin and title did not say Porsche on it anymore.

Initially, Ruf bought bodies in white from a Porsche dealership just like anyone would buy parts from a dealer. Buying a body shell or chassis is something you used to be able to do if your Porsche was so damaged that it was cheaper to replace the shell than fix the bodywork. From the bodies in white, Ruf would modify most every aspect of the car, including the suspension, the engine and transmission, and, of course, the interior. Even the body received enough changes that you immediately knew you were looking at something special when you saw a Ruf. To give you an idea of how special, the CTR Yellowbird was, it had a 3.2-liter turbocharged flat six that produced 463 horsepower. In 1987, Porsche’s own 911 Turbo in 1987 made only 282 horsepower. Furthermore, due to the fact that it used a narrow body instead of the Turbo’s wide body, was lighter weight, and had a unique five-speed manual instead of the four-speed, it was able to reach a top speed of 213 miles per hour. Contrast this with the factory 911 Turbo’s 157-mph v-max and you can see how Ruf established itself in the lexicon of limited-production, high-performance Porsches.

While an enthusiast may see the relationship between a “tuner” and a manufacturer as a positive thing, the manufacturers see it differently when it has no control over what the tuner does. In 2013, Porsche purchased a controlling interest in Manthey-Racing GbmH. This is why you will see Porsche dealers selling and installing the Manthey-Racing kit for Porsches, as well as Manthey-Racing 911s entered in GT classes as factory efforts.

Porsche does not own Ruf. In fact, it’s safe to say that they look at Ruf as a competitor of sorts. While Ruf’s production numbers are miniscule compared to Porsche’s, they do compete when it comes to exclusivity, which Porsche offers its customers with both the Exclusive Manufaktur and Sonderwunsch programs. They allow customers to have their Porsches individualized while still retaining the Porsche brand.

This car was sold new by Chapelgate Porsche 01-01-2000 (C16) as a GT3 However a chance meeting with Alois Ruf Jnr which led to a lunch date & the start of a long friendship with the RUF Family. As a result of the meetings & the forming of the new friendship Alois agreed to take the GT3 & convert it to a RUF RGT on its existing chassis.

The history file contains a letter from the owner telling of his relationship with Alois Ruf & the adventure he had with the car.

FYI for all the early gamers the 911 was not sanctioned by Porsche to be used in games so most with remember the RGT name, well this is the car for real.

The car looks very similar to a stock GT3 to the untrained eye however to those who know …………

Exterior

Its been stripped of any Porsche badging & replaced with RUF badging

Colin McRae’s Winning Escort

October 1, 2024

The Colin McRae – Robert Reid Rally Winning Ford Escort

Colin McRae already British champion took on the 1990 Chesterton Hackle Rally with his long time friend Robert Reid as co-driver. Both would go to become World Champions, Robert with Richard Burns, Colin with Derek Ringer.

Robert tells the story :- I remember the day well,I was in a potato field on the farm & the phone rang; it was McRae.”What you doing this weekend Rab,fancy doing the Hackle?

The Hackle Rally was a Scottish championship event run by my local car club & used some classic Scottish forest stages like Craigvinean, Errochty & Drummond hill.In those days there were no pace notes & the co drivers would read off a 1.25 scale map.

It was such a wet stormy day that by the time we got to the first stage the footwells were full of water & the stages were really slippy with standing water. We started 4th & when we got to the service after a couple of stages worked out that we were leading against quite a few four wheel drive cars.It was the Drummond Hill stage that afternoon I remember best though, It was still raining & we were on a quick, downhill ‘diagonal’ road in the middle of the stage.I was reading the maps & the next thing I’m aware is Colin loosening his belts & leaning over to my side of the car whilst pretty much flat out. We got to the end of the stage & I ask him what he was doing & it turned out the wiper arm was lifting off the screen on his side & he couldn’t see where we were going, all flat in top! We ended up winning the event by 2.5 minutes from Jimmy Girvan in a Toyota Celica GT4. All this happened a couple of weeks before the Audi Sports Rally where I would first meet Richard. Then Six weeks after the Hackle I did the Galloway hills rally with Alister McRae in the same Escort and two month later I would do my first event with Richard on the Wyedean.

This Ford Escort has been in the McRae Family for over 30 years it belonged to his Uncle Hugh Steel. Hugh & his son David have campaigned this escort in various guises over the years.

The car comes with a copy of the hardback book McRae (Just Colin) which lists all Colins events & cars on page 35 there is a picture the Escort (on the Hackle). also in the file is period rally reports on the event from magazines and a recent feature in Classic Ford magazine.

Colin McRae, 1968-2007

Written by Jaggy Bunnet on December 28, 2012

Full Throttle – Nothing Less …. The Early Years …. a very personal tribute …. first published in ‘Motorsport News’, September 2007 ….

Over recent weeks we’ve heard from the great and the good, now it’s my turn. I’m no jet-setting foreign correspondent flitting from one World Rally to the next, but I feel privileged just the same, because ‘I was there’ when an extraordinary talent first started to blossom.

I don’t use the word ‘hero’ lightly, but in this unique case, that one single word sums up how I regard a prodigious talent. Indeed, I was disappointed when he left the WRC behind because I felt there were more world titles to come and records to be broken.

I have witnessed Sunbeams that defy gravity, Novas that flew, and big, lumbering Ford Sierras that could have danced in Swan Lake. I have seen Subaru Legacys go ballistic, Metros sprinkled with magic dust and mental MkII Escorts. All down to just one man.

Don’t get me wrong, he was no angel. Infuriating? Yes. Stubborn? He could teach mules. Timekeeping? Hair-raising stuff, often accompanied by the screech of hot rubber on tarmac with a heat haze rising from the brake discs. Returning phone calls? Forget it. Then out of the blue the phone would ring: “John? Colin”, no remorse, no apology, it was as if he had just been speaking to you an hour before.

There was another irritation which bothered me but not him. Other journalists, some rally officials and even spectators wrote or spoke disparagingly about him, and that got me annoyed. Invariably these things were written or spoken by people who did not know him.

In the early stages of his career he found it difficult and uncomfortable having to deal with the demands of the media and with the adulation of a rapidly growing fan base. Single word responses and throw-away remarks were regarded by some as ignorant or even arrogant.

That was most certainly not the case. Colin McRae was a shy, and very modest young man. Yes, he was confident, cocky thought some, but basically a shy bloke shoved into the limelight. All he wanted to do was drive, and let his driving do the talking. Only later on in his career did he relax into the role thrust upon him and which further endeared him to a world wide following.

His talent transcended national borders and national favourites. What they got was 100% commitment, full throttle – no less. Team managers knew this, even if it did infuriate them at times. As one remarked at the time, “asking Colin to back off was like p*ss*ng into the wind!”

His first ever rally drive was in late 1985 at Kames, East Ayrshire Car Club’s self built facility just outside Muirkirk in Ayrshire. He had borrowed club member Davie Burden’s Avenger on the basis of: “If you put a gearbox in it, you can have it for Kames.” Job done.

Gordon Gracie had signed up for the passenger seat and things were going well until the 4th stage. They were actually in 4th place when the Avenger clipped a rock and tipped over. Spectators quickly pushed it back on to its wheels, and the youngster took off. He finished 14th overall.

With his first rally finish under his belt, he contested his first ‘proper’ forest rally the following month, the Galloway Hills Rally. As a mark of how serious this attempt was, he and co-driver Colin Smith entered his 1.6 Talbot Sunbeam Ti under the ‘Redundant Parent Rally Drivers Association’ banner, seeded at 76 in the 100 car entry, while the number 84 seeds, a certain Derek Ringer and Anne Cavanagh had entered their Clan Crusader under ‘Oor Wullie Cooking & Drinking Recipe Books’.

Coincidentally, up at the other end of the entry list I was actually co-driving (not the term he’d use) for Murray Grierson who later went on to become Colin’s Route Note checker on World rallies. We actually finished 2nd overall that day, Derek was 27th and a certain Barrie Lochhead finished 41st. As for Colin, he didn’t.

“The radiator burst,” he said. So why didn’t he fix it I asked. “Well, when the tree hit the radiator, it pushed it back into the fan, shoved the engine into the gearbox, which then smashed the prop shaft through the back axle!”

That meant a big repair job for Barrie and the youngster ahead of the 1986 Esso Scottish Rally Championship. Barrie was in fact the McRae’s secret weapon. Throughout Colin’s early career, Barrie was the guy that kept all four wheels turning and his skills were later appreciated by the likes of Andrew Cowan who was running the works Mitsubishi team in the World series when Colin joined Subaru.

Nicky Jack was Colin’s first regular co-driver, which was lucky for Colin. Nicky was a pretty, laid-back sort of guy who didn’t frighten easy. He also had trouble trying to rein him in. Colin’s progress was punctuated by highs and lows that year, but a 9th place finish on the Weldex Rally was pretty impressive, the Sunbeam outgunned by much more powerful machinery on the hills, which Colin made up for on the downhills.

He rounded off that season 18th overall at his first attempt in the Esso series and was 3rd in the Newcomers Championship. He was also presented with a ‘Jaggy Bunnet Flying Brick’ as the year’s hardest trier.

The Sunbeam was sold after that, but he needed a car desperately for his second attempt at the Galloway Hills Rally – because his Dad Jim said that if he did well in his first season he would co-drive for him in Galloway.

“I thought I was off the hook when he sold the Sunbeam,” said Jim, “but he bought Harry Hockly’s Group A Nova two days before the event.” It also provided Colin’s first taste of front wheel drive.

“He didn’t frighten me as much as I thought he was going to,” said Jim afterwards, “I can’t make up my mind whether it was his driving, or just that I’m getting used to it! Had it not been for punctures and fuel pump failure, we might have finished 7th – not bad for a totally unfamiliar car.”

Colin’s first event of the 1987 season was the Citroen Stages, a round of the British national series where he finished 26th, and was then invited to the Swedish Rally as part of the British Junior Rally Team effort. Jim had persuaded Ian Grindrod to co-drive (against Ian’s will!) but a road accident while recce-ing left Ian with a broken rib, although Colin escaped scot-free, so Mike Broad stepped in at the very last minute. They finished 36th overall despite emulating a snooker ball at times, ricocheting off the Swedish snowbanks.

Back on home soil, Derek ‘The Professor’ Ringer was re-installed as regular co-driver and the duo celebrated with a roll on the Skip Brown Rally, but crossed the finish line with no windows, 21st overall and 2nd in class. That was obviously good practice for the Granite City, where they rolled twice, on two separate stages, but this time didn’t finish.

The highlight of that year was probably the Manx National where the youngster scored a class win and finished 16th overall, then celebrated in style – by rolling on the last stage! Equally noteworthy was Colin’s 11th overall and class win, with no rolls, on the Hackle Rally where Barrie stood in for Derek in a Vauxhall Nova on stages renowned for their steep, power sapping climbs. According to Barrie, the descents would have provided future NASA Shuttle pilots with good experience.

In 1988 came his first major title. He won the Scottish Championship, and in 1989, he finished second overall in the British Championship in the RED Ford Sierra. The Association of Scottish Motoring Writers also recognised this new talent when they awarded him the Jim Clark Memorial Trophy for that year.

He then joined the Prodrive Rothmans Subaru team for 1990 winning the British title that year and the next, justifying David Richards’ faith. He was no longer just a successful Scottish driver, he was now public property.

But typical of the man, Colin borrowed his ‘Uncle Shooey’s’ MkII Ford Escort (with a 2.4 Pinto!) in 1990 to contest the Hackle Rally and simply trounced the opposition.

It was the year of the gales and heavy rain, with rushing rain water causing landslips and turning gravel roads to rivers. And through it all danced a daring MkII with McRae at the wheel and Robert Reid on the maps.

He beat Scottish Champion Jimmy Girvan that day in a four wheel drive Toyota Celica GT4, plus six other 4WD cars. Colin won by 32 seconds on an event more suited to powerboats, let alone four wheel drive rally cars!

And the rest, as they say, is history, but it was the manner of his winning that attracted the almost cult following that grew with every public appearance.

Now concentrating on events outwith Scotland, he preferred to let his driving do the talking. His succinct and terse comments may not have found favour with journalists but they struck a chord with spectators. No PR-speak here, just pithy, celtic humour which some found difficult to comprehend.

Even at the height of his World Championship career, Colin never forgot his roots, and he often felt most at home and relaxed at Coltness Car Club social nights. There was no public adulation or clamour for autographs, just a bunch of guys watching Jim Barclay video films, having a drink and having a laugh.

So it was only natural that when Coltness Car Club took up a vacant Forestry Commission allocation to stage a round of the Scottish Championship they approached Colin for help. Big Jim Brown and myself went up to see him at his Mum and Dad’s house. We didn’t get past the kitchen.

The kitchen was the family hub, and as we sat down at the table, Margaret poured the coffee and opened the biscuit tin. We outlined our plans and our hopes and he said: “How much do you need?”

The McRae Motorsport Stages Rally was in business, and both he and the rest of the family have supported it ever since. Indeed, the first time Colin undertook Course Car duties, wife Alison, already an accomplished co-driver, was on the maps.

The annual kitchen meeting continued when Colin moved to his own house where latterly visitors had to be careful not to step on toys or small wellingtons. In fact Colin later joked that he only sponsored the event because Big Jim asked – and you don’t say ‘No’ to Big Jim.

It was Colin’s way of putting something back into the club and the sport. What is less well known is the number of younger drivers that Colin spent time with individually over the years and more recently on a formal basis with the Albar Junior Scholarship in the County Saab Scottish Championship.

He also helped in other ways. At a time when the MSA was bringing in new and tougher rules regarding the compulsory wearing of fireproof race suits, the Coltness contingent looked like extras from a Rothmans advert. They all turned out in blue and white, cigarette emblazoned racesuits with embroidered ‘Colin McRae’ name badges. As each season and rally contract came to an end, Colin would give his old suits to club members. Onlookers must have been bemused, with dozens of ‘genuine’ Colin McRaes running about!

He loved anything with an engine, even jet-skis. Indeed he and Barrie fitted a Ford Escort Cosworth engine and drivetrain into a Ford Transit van, just so he could get to the water quicker! That passion extended from quads and Rage buggies to race bikes and race cars and ultimately to helicopters.

It was a passion matched with talent. He was competitive in everything he drove from a BTCC BMW at a wet Knockhill round to a Jordan F1 car, from a Nissan pickup on the Paris-Dakar to Ferraris at Le Mans, and even a works Suzuki Moto GP bike.

Outwardly, his was an attacking, flamboyant driving style, but inside that same car, the picture was very different. Colin’s hand and foot movements were almost slow motion in comparison with the speed-blur that was happening on the other side of the glass. In fact, he reminded me of another boyhood hero, Jim Clark – another prodigious talent who was humanly faster than any mechanical device he was given.

As a helicopter pilot, he had a meticulous approach and deft touch on the controls. Shortly after he got the Squirrel, he gave Jim Brown and myself a lift up to Perth. I found it very hard that day to reconcile the image of the professional pilot with my first recollections of a hell-for-leather motor cyclist.

He was about 12 or 13 at the time and I had taken Jim and Colin and their trials bikes to an area where I used to practice. At one end of the ground was a near vertical grassy slope, which I claimed to have climbed on my bike.

The youngster looked at it, “Did you really get up that on your bike?” I winked at Jim and said, “Sure, I started it in third and changed down to 2nd half way up.”

It was the high revving buzz of a two-stroke that alerted the chatting Jim and myself to the tearaway in the background. He launched himself at the climb in third and changed down half way up, but failed to reach the top, so he calmly turned the bike around, rode back down and went at it again, full throttle in third. All the way to the top and finished off with a wheelie over the crest before plopping the front wheel down and giving me a smug look.

I said to Jim: “That kid is something special” and you know something, I was right. I also told a fib, I hadn’t ridden my own bike up that cliff face at all!

I feel very privileged. I watched a boy grow into manhood and become a hero.

Amongst the many, many memories, on a recent evening visit to the house I got no further than the garage. Willie Kirkhope’s Transit was sitting outside and I could hear them inside. When I looked in, Escort bits were strewn over the floor, the car was up on axle stands and the two of them were in old clothes. I suddenly had a flashback to the unit at the top of Lanark where Colin and Barrie were often working against the clock to get a car ready to rally and had called in Willie for an extra pair of hands. The banter was good, the coffee tasted of engine oil and the lights burned well into the night. Some things never changed.

Those memories keep flooding back, and I can’t help thinking of the four who are no longer with us. My heart goes out to them, their families and their friends

This wee guy should be in retirement now that he’s a spritly 65 year old however its been restored to an as good as new condition & ready for another 65 ! No mot required however it will come fully motd, another advantage is its road tax & LEZ exempt.

Never intended to be a concours garage queen, the owner just wanted to save it for the next generation & keep his head busy after the depression of lock down. What he has produced is a beautiful car with a little more power than standard (1275 cc) making it so much more fun. It drives beautiful, looks fantastic & the wire wheels really add to its sporty appearance. We as a company we could not restore a car to this condition for less than £60k due to labour rates so this is indeed a bargain, unlikely to depreciate & just make you smile when you look at his wee face. It retains its original registration number.

It comes with a large history file & a photograph album of the restoration

1 Owner E-TYPE

January 3, 2024

Border Reivers have done it again, offering yet another incredible low mileage car to the market.

One lady owner from new’ is a well-used expression that has pervaded the motor trade for decades and refers to the mythical situation where suddenly a car becomes available that has covered very few miles, is in wonderful condition, and has only been lightly used and kept warm and dry by its one lady owner. A rare occurrence, never really happens you might think, but, it’s not a myth, it does happen, and this E-Type is the perfect example. According to its accompanying Heritage Certificate, this left-hand drive, Series 2 Jaguar E-Type OTS was originally finished in Pale Primrose Yellow with a Black interior – the colour scheme it pleasingly wears today. Manufactured on 22nd August 1968, it was dispatched to Herrington Motors of Montgomery, New York State and purchased by its first and only private keeper, a Miss Sarah J Hammer. The car was indeed used lightly for the first 17 years covering only 45,000 miles until, in 1985, a long-term illness prevented Miss Hammer from driving her beloved E-Type and it was put into storage. There it was to remain for the next 29 years until its inevitable sale. There is a letter with the car from Miss Hammer in late August 2015 confirming her sole ownership and the mileage of 45,063 at that point. Prior to its return to the UK the car was subject to a mechanical overhaul by Klaus Motors of New York. On its arrival here it was treated to a full service with fresh fluids and fitted with a new brake servo, brake and clutch master cylinders, a stainless steel exhaust, five new period-correct Dunlop tyres, and a new hood and carpets by Aldridge Trimmers. A matching chassis and engine numbers example, the car is accompanied by the aforementioned Heritage Certificate, a collection of invoices, handbooks, original wallet with service book, and the original jack and hammer in their bag. The original advisory sticker is still on the speedo and 70’s service stickers have been left in place on the B-post. There is also a NOVA document confirming all taxes paid and a current MOT with ‘no advisories’. This is indeed a rare opportunity. A ‘one lady owner from new’ low mileage, Primrose E-Type with perfect provenance and a chance to become its second custodian. it is surely unrepeatable.A rare opportunity indeed.

History
The Jaguar E-Type, or the Jaguar XK-E for the North American market, is a British sports car that was manufactured by Jaguar Cars Ltd between 1961 to 1975. Its combination of beauty, high performance, and competitive pricing established the model as an icon of the motoring world. The E-Type’s 150 mph (241 km/h) top speed, sub-7-second 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) acceleration, monocoque construction, disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, and independent front and rear suspension distinguished the car and spurred industry-wide changes. The E-Type was based on Jaguar’s D-Type racing car, which had won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three consecutive years beginning 1955, and employed a racing design with both the body tub and engine bolted directly to the frame.
On its release in March 1961, Enzo Ferrari called the E-Type “the most beautiful car ever made”. In 2004, Sports Car International magazine placed the E-Type at number one on their list of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s. In March 2008, the Jaguar E-Type ranked first in The Daily Telegraph online list of the world’s “100 most beautiful cars” of all time. Outside automotive circles, the E-type has, with prominent placement in Austin Powers films (claim to fame European Collectibles sold the Shaguar to the movie studios and did the restoration including the union jack flag paint job) and the television series Mad Men, become cemented as an icon of its era.
The Series 1 was introduced, initially for export only, in March 1961. The domestic market launch came four months later in July 1961. The cars at this time used the triple SU carburetted 3.8-litre six-cylinder Jaguar XK6 engine from the XK150S. Earlier built cars utilized external bonnet latches which required a tool to open and had a flat floor design. These cars are rare and more valuable. After that, the floors were dished to provide more leg room and the twin bonnet latches moved to inside the car. The 3.8-litre engine was increased to 4.2 liters in October 1964.
Automotive journalists consistently ranked the Jaguar E-Type roadster as one of the most beautiful cars ever built. We couldn’t agree more. In fact, that seems to be the consensus with everyone. People are just drawn to E-types.

Its road tax exempt, mot exempt & its also exempt from the London T-charge being a historic vehicle & from 7th Sept 2020, all historic vehicles will be exempt from the ULEZ. The 24/7 zone will have the same borders as the current Congestion Charge Zone

Many thanks Tom, it was great to make business with you!Thomas Eder aus Bayern Thomas Eder Racing his Porsche at the Nurburgring(Translated below)A TRIP TO SCOTLAND to veiw a 1959 Porsche 356A - Very good condition, built for racing!  As per the add, I fell in love with the car which was offered by Border Reivers, So a flight booked flown to  Scotland. Quite a bit away from idyllic Glasgow situated on a lake,is where the company "Border Reivers" hides and specializes in high quality cars. The owner - Tom Fitzsimmons is more than friendly to us and very helpful. Caters to his customers every whim. He gave us late night run to Glasgow for a meat, shortly before midnight after back after it. We were in a spotless showroom, full of the objects of desire. He gave us peace to inspect and allowed us to undergo a test drive through the highlands afterwards. We agreed the purchase and some special requests and modifications to be carried out which were done by Border Reivers. We paid for the car and it was delivered to our doorstep in Munich, Germany in a covered transporter. A truly perfect and friendly service which is not self-evident.
