Border Reivers are delighted to offer this beautiful 1966 Jaguar MKII 3.8 Manual with Overdrive.
One of Jaguar’s slogans in the early 1960’s was “Grace, pace and space” and arguably no model demonstrated this more than the Jaguar MKII 3.8. The Jaguar MKII was an elegant car and the MKII 3.8 in particular was very quick and was often described as the “gentleman’s express”. The MKII Jaguar is a powerful, good handling saloon car that came with a choice of three six cylinder twin cam engines, 2.4, 3.4 or 3.8 litre. The 3.8 unit used for this model was very similar to the 3.8 engine used in the E-Type having the same block, crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons but different inlet manifold and carburetion. The cylinder head of the six cylinder engine in the MKII had curved ports compared to straight ports of the E-Type. The MKII Jaguar 3.8 was capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds and could reach a top speed of 125mph. The engine produced 220bhp and is still a quick car even by today’s standards. Certainly when new, it was one of the quickest saloon cars you could buy in this country.
This smartly presented example is a South African export model, shipped out to South Africa semi-built during the 1960’s. Many export models tended to use Ambler upholstery, preferred in warmer climates and often these export cars are found to be very original and solid on the body. On inspection we can confirm the car is structurally excellent and very original on the body. The underside looks totally original and sills and floors all appear untouched and totally solid. The engine bay and boot area also appear totally originally with the original Old English White paint still well presented. This MKII has clearly led a sheltered life and has not been exposed to the elements that cause the rust issues that are so often associated with the Jaguar MKII model.
The Jaguar has only been registered in the UK since 2011. We are told, but do not have history to support that the car had just one Doctor owner in South Africa and it arrived in the UK as a one owner car. It has clearly had a good quality re-paint at some stage over the past few years and the upholstery re-trimmed. The seats, door cards and carpets are exceptional and the headlining and woodwork appear original and in very good order. The car has some nice original qualities and with bright, fresh paintwork, chrome wire wheels and re-trimmed upholstery, this is a very attractive motor car.
Over the past year the current owner has spent nearly £18,000 on the recommissioning due to it being in long term storage, in South Africa and latterly in the UK. All of this expenditure is listed within its history file, however a short appraisal of the work includes, engine strip down cleaned and rebuilt with new parts where required, the gearbox and overdrive unit has been refurbished, a new clutch fitted, the front axil has been removed stripped, cleaned and painted and fully rebuilt with new parts, including the suspension. The brakes have been totally overhauled with new upgraded front discs, callipers and servo unit. The car has a new set of tyres fitted to the car a few hundred miles ago.
Cosmetically the car has a purpose built wooden steering wheel fitted with original MK 2 Jaguar centre and horn ring, and a very expensive DVD/CD player installed into the original Jaguar centre console.
On road this MKII Jaguar is a real pleasure to drive with its very strong 3.8 litre engine demonstrating excellent performance with a very good oil pressure. The car starts and runs extremely well and attracts admiring glances and attention when it is out on the road. The all syncro gearbox is smooth with nice gear changes and the overdrive works perfectly. A very strong, original Jaguar MKII 3.8 that is ready to be enjoyed.Border
